On Thursday, May 14, Palm Beach Day Academy’s Athletic Department celebrated the athletic achievements of the 7th – 9th Grade boys at their Annual Sports Banquet. While this year’s ceremony looked a bit different than the traditional banquet held in years past at Palm Beach’s Sailfish Club, the PBDA spirit was alive and well as coaches took to the screen to replicate the beloved banquet as best they could in a virtual format.
Athletes, their parents, and PBDA faculty were invited to tune-in to a Vimeo link at 6:30pm on the dot to celebrate the boys’ many wins and learnings on the field and courts throughout the ’19-’20 year. The online ceremony began with opening remarks by Head of School Fanning Hearon, followed by a welcome by Athletic Director Paul Cicio. Next, Billy Coyle, Co-Head of the Varsity Flag Football Team recounted his team’s wins, including that this year’s Flag Football championship game was the closest contest in championship history. Next, Chris Niebling shared highlights from the JV Boys Flag Football season before announcing memorable moments from the Varsity and JV Boys Soccer season. Continuing the banquet, Coach Coyle spoke about the Varsity Basketball team followed by Grace Gunkel who detailed the JV Basketball team. While the Varsity Lacrosse was unfortunately only able to play two games before the COVID-19 outbreak stopped their season, Coach Cicio shared stand-out moments from the shortened season. Cloe Mimun, PBDA’s Lead Fitness Instructor, announced the “PBDA Fitness Award.” The first-of-its-kind virtual banquet wrapped with closing remarks by Coach Cicio and Sarah Kemeness, and a 6-minute slideshow of favorite moments throughout each of the seasons.
During the ceremony, Athletic Director Paul Cicio also honored the Walter H. Butler Field Day Captains. This year’s award went to the winning Flamingo Captain Tyler Aronson, as well as Pelican Captain Ted Jemsten. Following, the coaches honored this year’s Field Day Maddock Winners, Roger Ramos for the Standing Broad Jump and 100-yard dash, and Tyler Aronson for the Football Throw and Boy/Girl Relay.
