Flamingos Win the 89th Annual Walter H. Butler Field Day

After a Pelican win two years in a row at the annual Palm Beach Day Academy Field Day, the Flamingos were thrilled to earn back their winning title at the 89th annual Walter H. Butler Field Day, held this year on Saturday, February 22, 2020 and sponsored by Schumacher Automotive Group.

The Flamingos held a steady lead against the opposing Pelicans throughout the entire day and ultimately topped their opponent 302-196. For the first time ever, students and families could follow along with the team rosters, individual event scores and the overall score with the new PBDA Field Day app. To maintain the suspense of how the day would ultimately play out, the final Pelican vs. Flamingo score was permanently paused on the app halfway through the morning.

Named in honor of former Head of School Walter H. Butler, the school’s tradition began in 1931 when PBDA was only 10 years old. In the first three decades of the event, parents would join in on the competition to participate in events ranging from wheelbarrow races to sack races. Today, parents take the role of cheerleading very seriously, reaffirmed by the spirited blue or yellow outfits that spotted the sidelines of the fields at the new Mandel Recreation Center.

Field Day team activities include relay races and obstacle courses for students in Kindergarten through 4th Grade, and soccer and basketball games for 4th- 9th grades. The final two events of the day before winners are announced are the 5th-9th grade Distance and Relay Races, followed by the highly-anticipated Tugs-O-War.

Individual sports included Dashes, Jumping Events and Throwing Events. Every point a student scored went to the overall team score of the Pelicans and Flamingos.

We invite you to mark your calendars for next year’s big Centennial Year Field Day! We hope all past and future friends of the school will join us on February 27, 2021 as we commemorate our school’s 100th year with a bigger-than-ever Field Day event.
