Thanksgiving Project 2018
Posted on: November 15, 2018
The Thanksgiving Project is a long-standing community project that includes students from Pre-Primary to Fourth Grade. The purpose of this project is to provide Thanksgiving dinners for the families at Glades Academy in Pahokee. We are helping 220 families this holiday season.
The entire Lower School community and the 4th Grade are involved with this project – first, by bringing specific food items to help make a complete Thanksgiving dinner that includes rice, sugar and Wynn Dixie gift cards donated by Florida Crystals. Donations, earned by students in Second, Third, and Fourth Grade through their participation in the Read-A-Thon, are contributed to the project. Third Grade students are the ambassadors for this program and they helped sort, collect and deliver the boxes to the families at Glades Academy.
On the morning the boxes were delivered, every grade played a role in preparing, sorting and/or delivering the boxes of food. Pre-Primary through Third Grade decorated cards for the bags. The lunchroom was set up like a grocery store and students went around collecting the items and filling the bag to make up a dinner. Once the bags were completed, students helped load the truck that takes the food to its destination.
When the 3rd Graders, teachers and PBDA volunteers reached Glades Academy, they were met by students who helped unload the boxes to get them ready for pick-up later in the day by the Glades Academy families. They then proceeded to a new outdoor Sports Pavilion and had lunch together. The students of Glades Academy performed songs, skits, dances and cheers for everyone in attendance.
